Continuing dental care during orthodontic treatment

It is very important that you continue to maintain oral care during your orthodontic treatment. Fixed braces sometimes makes it essential for you to brush your teeth more frequently. It is in your interest to keep your teeth in good health and protect them from dental cavities and gum disease. We will monitor your dental health during your braces treatment and recommend if you need dental cleaning or cavity filling. You may also visit your family dentist once every six months, even during your orthodontic treatment, for teeth cleanings and routine dental checkups. If extra dental care is needed, we will be happy to provide it to you or coordinate with your family dentist to make sure that you are receiving the best care possible.

Treatment progress and mid treatment evaluation

At your follow up appointments, we will evaluate your treatment progress and change your wires / add additional orthodontic forces to continue your treatment. We make sure that your treatment progresses in a seamless manner so that we reach the final results quickly. We always want your treatment to finish on time and you get the maximum benefit in terms of esthetics, function, health and stability.

If necessary, we take mid treatment x ray records to evaluate treatment progress.

Pre finishing evaluation, fixed retainers and debonding

Once your teeth are visually in their final position, we take prefinishing records in most cases to make sure that teeth are in the correct position. Once it is confirmed that the teeth are in their final corrected position we take feedback from the patient to know if they desire any additional correction. We often do surpass the expectations of the patients in terms of esthetic change with the finished result.

In most cases we give bonded retainers to maintain the corrected position of the front teeth. These retainers are bonded behind the teeth and are not visible.

The braces are then carefully removed and the glue marks are removed to reveal the original natural shiny enamel.

Post treatment records are made and patient is scheduled for removable retainer.

Retention

Retention is an important phase of orthodontic treatment. After the braces are removed, the teeth need to be maintained in the corrected position till soft and hard tissues around the teeth remodel and conform to the corrected position of teeth. This phase also gives an opportunity for natural settling of teeth.

Inability to wear retainers during recommended retention phase may lead to orthodontic relapse and final results are compromised. Orthodontic relapse may require retreatment with fixed braces to arrive at corrected teeth position again.
